Royals to sell Shorey

It appears that Nicky Shorey will be the first 'big name' to leave Reading, following the clubs relegation.

The England international has been rubbish this season, perhaps because he has been anticipating a move, or perhaps because he is actually rubbish, but regardless, he looks to be leaving the club.

Shorey joined the Royals from Leyton Orient back in 2001 and has played in three divisions for the Royals.

Despite not actually spending any money while in the Premier League, Royals Cheif Executive Nigel Howe claims the club will need to sell Shorey to generate some funds.

He said, 'Nicky Shorey and a few others will be looked at as potential people to leave,' said Howe.

'Nicky has made it clear for a long time that he hasn't been too happy at the club.

'Well, let's hope that somebody comes in with a good offer.'

Unbelievably the board are not willing to fund Coppell to strengthen his side as Howe explained.

'What we have said to Steve is that if he trades well it should release enough funds to go forward.

'But he won't have money unless he sells. At the moment we are just trying to balance the budget.

The concern is to keep as many of the core squad together. But Steve does want to reduce the squad so he is expecting to receive offers for players.

'If Steve wants to keep all the players on the same salaries, there won't be the release of funds. If he reduces the wage bill, he will have funds.

'Even though we get the £11million parachute we have still got very highly paid players - even with the reduction in wages - so I think we will have to budget for a small loss.

'Salaries have to be at the middle range and some in the upper range for the Championship.'

It seems that Nigel Howe and John Madejski have no ambition to get the club back in the Premier League, and unless they're attitude changes, it may be another disappointing season for Royals fans.

Good riddance

Not a great write up chaps, especially if Reading are looking to cash in on Shorey. Why are the club not backing the manager with cash, surely with money coming in from Shorey and the parachute payment there will be enough funds available to bounce straight back.

Bouncing back may not be the best thing, parachutes last two seasons, sell a few of the better players, grab the Sky money and flog the club. Sounds horrible but thats what they were planning at birmingham city I reckon till the buyer came to his senses.

Relegation has taught the club absolutely nothing. Madejski still thinks we can be successful with the squad we've got, he couldn't be more wrong! He's done a fantastic job at reading, but his hearts no longer in it and he wants to sell asap, therefore he isn't willing to invest as he wants to keep the bank balance looking nice and healthy.
