Luton Defeat Spured Royals On

Reading striker Dave Kitson told today when he knew that the Royals were heading to the Premiership.

All talk of promotion was frowned upon in the Reading dressing room and training pitch. Kitson didn’t even know hat Reading were so far in front of the rest of the pack until after the defeat at Kenilworth Road in February.

After the defeat he wanted to check on the table because they had dropped points, something which the Royals were not used to.

Kitson said: 'We never encouraged any talk of promotion or worried about what anyone else was doing, we just went about our own business of winning football matches.

'We never looked at the league table, the manager wouldn't allow any of it.

'And while we were winning and on such a good run it was easy to do, but after that loss something crossed my mind because we had dropped points. I saw the league table and I couldn't believe it, we had something like a 10-point lead.

'It was then I realised that we wouldn't have a better chance of getting into the Premiership. It really was ours to throw away and I knew the manager would not let us do that and the players would not allow it to happen.'
