After another goal less draw on Saturday against Coventry, and more missed chances from Shane Long, it was no surprise to hear Brian McDermott come out in support of his misfiring striker. He told the Reading Post,
'I just say to him, do the right things. I keep faith with players who are putting themselves on the line for the club, and that's what he's doing.'
Whilst this is anything but a Shane Long bashing, are these same lines not becoming very tiresome and has the time not come for the Irish striker to put up or (his manager) to shut up!
I have said time and time again how hard Long works for the team and his commitment can never be questioned. His ability can though and for a number 9 who leads our line, 4 goals (3 pens) in 19 starts this season is not acceptable.
Right now we have no one to replace him and that is the fault of the manager. He cannot use the excuse of having no funds to bring anyone in, as when we were desperate for a new striker he brought in a defensive midfielder.
We have been waiting a long long time for Long to score goals on a consistant basis but he has never delivered. Stop the talking and act quickly when the window opens in January to get a new striker in, whether that is to partner Long or Noel Hunt it doesn't matter.
