Royals consider former England defender
Reading are considering the possibility of signing free agent Anthony Gardner, following his release from Hull in May.
The former Tottenham defender spent the majority of last season on loan at Championship rivals Crystal Palace, in which he made 28 appearances and scored one goal.
McDermott has promised Royals supporters he will bring in a new centre half, following the shortage of them left by the departures of Matt Mills, Ivar Ingimarsson and Zurab Khizanishvilli.
Due to Reading's financial restrictions, going into the loan market or looking at free agents appears to be the best option for the Royals boss, as he cannot use any of the funds gained from the Matt Mills transfer.
The one time England defender boasts plenty of Premier League experience with Tottenham, appearing 114 times for Spurs.
However, injury has hindered him at many stages in his career and Reading could be the team to offer a lifeline to the 6'5 defender, to solve their ever-growing centre back problem.
