McDermott states desire to keep squad together

Reading boss Brian McDermott has revealed his desire to keep his squad together for the upcoming Championship season, even if it includes losing star striker Shane Long.

Reading are looking for around the £8m mark for the Republic of Ireland international, with West Brom the latest club to be reportedly keen on the 24-year old.

McDermott has said if Long was to go, that would be the last of the departures from the Berkshire club, with Reading having already seen captain Matt Mills go to Leicester in a deal worth around £5m.

The Royals boss told BBC Berkshire: 'If Shane goes that's it, there'll be no-one else. We already lost Mills and we got to keep this team together.'

There is a variety of interest in other players in the Reading squad, with the likes of Jimmy Kebe, Jem Karacan and Adam Federici being linked with a number of clubs.

These players are more than likely to be involved in tomorrows friendly against Turkish top division side Karabukspor, in the final game of the Royals pre-season tour of Slovenia.
