Albion lead chase for Royals ace

West Bromwich Albion are leading the race to sign Reading striker Shane Long, with a number of teams also rumoured to be interested in the 24-year old.

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson has been a long-term admirer of Long, even during his short time as Liverpool manager.

The Royals look set to hold out for around the 8m mark for their star striker, who currently has one year left on his current contract and the Berkshire club may not want to take the risk of losing him for nothing next summer.

Newcastle are also rumoured to be in for the Republic of Ireland international, with the Magpies short of striking options after the sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool and Kevin Nolan to Championship rivals West Ham.

McDermott has always touted him of being capable of playing in the Premier League, following his 25 goals last season.

The Royals boss said: "I said to him in January that if we failed to be promoted I would do my best for him in terms of finding him a Premier League club, if it was good for the club and for him.'
