'If It's Football, It's Vital'

McDermott: We deserved to win

Reading boss Brian McDermott has shown his frustration at this teams failure to see out the game in their 1-1 draw with league leaders Southampton.

The Royals led with an extra man until the final 10 minutes when Steve de Ridder came off the bench to earn his team a priceless point at the Madejski Stadium.

McDermott told the official RFC website: 'We were 1-0 up, but our fans will go home disappointed and we will too. We're absolutely gutted that we haven't got the three points'.

'Conceding is a kick in the teeth, whether it's against ten men or eleven. In isolation, from a throw in, it doesn't matter if you've got ten or eleven men - that in itself is not an issue.'

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins admitted his team were poor and was full of praise for the Royals. 'Reading played very well in the game and we gave our supporters something to cheer at the end which is very pleasing.'

'At the end of the day away from home, a goal behind, and down to ten men, we've probably played our best football towards the end when that happened.'
