'If It's Football, It's Vital'

McDermott disagrees with referee's decision

Reading manager Brian McDermott has admitted that him and the officials talked over the goal in yesterday's 1-0 loss to Hull and both have differing opinions on the matter.

Winger Robbie Brady scored the winner in the 65th minute but in debatable circumstances. Striker Aaron McLean was offside and was about to touch the ball but pulled out at the last minute to allow the onside Brady to run through and score.

McDermott told the RFC official website: 'Apparently their directive is that if someone is running after the ball and is offside - but he doesn't touch it - then they've been told not to put their flag up. It's news to me, but it's what they've been told so credit to them for coming and speaking to me.'

'I've just spoken to the referee, we watched the goal together, with the linesman as well. He came in and explained the situation. Unless he touches it, which McLean didn't and he was pushed out of the way by Brady who scored, that's what they've been told to do.'

The game was a very scrappy one, with neither teams creating a huge amount of chances. However, the Royals should have a stronger squad in a weeks time against Bristol City, with captain Jobi McAnuff and Jimmy Kebe set to return.
