Royals defender on verge of new deal
Reading defender Ian Harte is on the verge of signing a new deal with the Royals.
The 34-year old's contract runs out at the end of this current season and the club are yet to offer the veteran defender a new one. However, a fine string of performances in recent months coinciding with promotion and a second consecutive place in the PFA Team of the Year make a new deal for Harte a highly likely possibility.
Harte joined the Royals from Carlisle in 2010 for an incredible £75,000 and scored a highly credible 10 goals in his first season, also keeping 14 clean sheets. The Republic of Ireland international hasn't been as prominent this season in terms of goals, with only five this season, but has helped the Royals have the meanest defence in the division.
The former Leeds player is keen to have another crack at the Premier League, following his spell at Elland Road but it is expected that Harte will only get an extra year in his contract. Reading boss Brian McDermott is likely to look for reinforcements at left back with Harte bound to be a rotation option, with former defender Ryan Bertrand linked with a possible move.
