Reading manager Brian McDermott believes his current squad of players will go down in Reading FC history.
The former Slough boss has led the Royals to the Premier League for only the second time in their 141-year history. On the other occasion, Reading also finished top of the table but with a record breaking 106 points under Steve Coppell. Despite McDermott not reaching those heights, huge credit is deserved for the 51-year old, who lost the play-off final last year.
Speaking to the official Reading FC website, McDermott said: 'Some great names have held that trophy - the likes of Frank McLintock, Alan Hanson, all your big clubs, the Tottenhams, the Liverpools - it's just a fantastic trophy to have. Now we're in the same league as those clubs and that's what you strive for.'
'We've won the Championship and that goes down in history, this team will now go down as one of the best teams Reading has ever had and they deserve all the plaudits. [When asked about the open-top bus parade] It's amazing! I didn't think anyone would turn up - it was pouring with rain and it was just a fantastic turnout. We were soaking wet but it didn't matter. I enjoyed the moment.'
All the players and staff are now currently in Marbella, Spain, enjoying a well-deserved break. The players will be enjoying a big summer break but McDermott and Director of Football Nicky Hammond are sure to be busy figures in the next few weeks, finding recruits for the upcoming Premier League season.
