Madejski: Rodgers chose the wrong people

Reading chairman Sir John Madejski has said that Brendan Rodgers' poor tenure at the club can also be put down to his backroom staff.

Speaking to the Reading Post, Madejski said: "I don`t want to name names. I just think that for one reason or another it just didn`t gel for one reason or another. If we had given them longer it might have done, but we were looking to maintain our Championship momentum and just felt that we couldn`t afford to take more time."

"I think the choice of people he had around him didn`t help him too much. We were on a trajectory that wasn`t working and sometimes you have to act before it`s too late. But I`ve never had any problems with Brendan Rodgers and I thought he was a great manager and was with me for years before he went to Chelsea."

Madejski appointed Rodgers as Reading manager in the summer of 2009, but the former Chelsea coach only managed five wins in 21 games, which led to his eventual dismissal just six months later. Rodgers brought in Dean Austin as his assistant manager, with Frank Lampard Snr. as his footballing consultant.
