Royals snap up young Irish star

Reading have completed the signing of highly-rated youngster Pierce Sweeney.

The 17-year old has signed from Bray Wanderers for an undisclosed fee, fending off interest from Premier League side Everton to complete the deal. Sweeney made 12 appearances for the Irish side last season and his fine, mature performances attract interest from Brian McDermott.

Reading have been known to pick up gems from the League of Ireland, with former strikers Kevin Doyle and Shane Long the clear examples of this. It is unlikely that Sweeney will play a part in the Royals' Premier League campaign, but will no doubt be a good acquisition for the future.
