Shorey completes Reading return

Reading have confirmed the signing of their former defender Nicky Shorey.

The 31-year old has put pen-to-paper on a one-year deal following his release from West Brom and returns to the club where he enjoyed the most successful stint of his career. The deal was completed yesterday and Shorey has already trained with his new team mates and is expected to play a part in the Royals' friendly at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.

Shorey's father, Steve, is still cheif scout at Reading, while the former Leyton Orient player would have worked under Brian McDermott also. Shorey made 267 appearances in a Royals shirt, scoring 12 goals and becoming a cult hero at the Madejski Stadium for his superb performances from left back. He also earned two England caps in 2008 for his notable displays.

Many fans have questioned whether Shorey still has the capability to play in the Premier League, but there is no doubt he is still a player that can do a job in the top division. Has a superb left foot and was voted RFC's best ever left back. It also gives suitable competition to Ian Harte, who may not be able to cope with the full demands of the Premier League.

A welcome return or should players never return then chaps?!
The Fear
For me is never return. However, I will be willing to give Shorey a chance considering what a fantastic left back he was for us.
