Defender Ulises De La Cruz has joined the Royals on a free transfer after leaving Villa Park at the end of last season. The 32-year-old international has signed a one year deal with the club.
De La Cruz had been training with the Royals all week but was deemed unfit to play against Wigan yesterday.
The right back played in every one of Ecuador`s summer World Cup campaign, featuring against teams such as Poland, Germany and England.
De La Cruz played regularly for Aston Villa, however it is still unclear if he will be a starting member of the Reading team as he occupies the same position as long standing captain Graeme Murty.
It is thought that manager Steve Coppell wants to add depth to the squad and encourage competition for places in the team to avoid any complacency at the top level.
Nicky Hammond said: "(De La Cruz) is a very good player who adds depth to our defensive options. He has proven his ability on the international stage and impressed during training with us all week."
De La Cruz added: 'I have not played in the last couple of months so I need to quickly adapt to the team. But I have been training with the players for the last few days and really enjoyed it.
'I will work hard for a place in the side, and help the team to a good season. It`s a good opportunity and very motivating for me."
