Goalkeeper delighted with Premier League debut

Reading goalkeeper Alex McCarthy has admitted he is delighted to have made his Premier League debut and hopes to retain his place in the side.

The 22-year old was selected for Sunday's game against Tottenham, after Royals boss Brian McDermott took the decision to drop usual number one Adam Federici. Despite making a few good early saves, the England U21 international had nervous points in the game, but came through unharmed and McCarthy hopes to solidify the starting spot.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, McCarthy said: 'After playing in the Championship, I`ve always wanted to make the step up to the Premier League. The games in this league are a lot more quicker paced, with better quality players. I`m over the moon to get my Premier League debut and hopefully I can build on it from here.'

'I was happy to make a few saves at the start of the game to get me into it. I wanted to get an early touch to get into the game so it was nice to make a double-save! We`ve got our game under our belts so hopefully we can build on it. I have long-term hopes of playing for England one day, so hopefully this is my chance to kick on."
