Royals boss explains Federici omission

Royals boss explains Federici omission

Reading manager Brian McDermott has said that he dropped Adam Federici due to bad form and not a reported injury that kept him out of the Australia squad.

The 27-year old keeper made two crucial mistakes in the two opening games of the Premier League season, which has opted McDermott to select Alex McCarthy in goal for Sunday's encounter against Tottenham. Although McDermott did not deny reports of an injury to Federici, he felt McCarthy deserved his chance between the sticks.

Speaking to BBC Radio Berkshire, McDermott said: 'I really like Adam and he works very hard but things have not gone his way, so Alex has come into the team. The fact of the matter is, I spoke to Adam on Saturday and I made a decision that Alex McCarthy was going to play in the game on Sunday.'

'No player at the club is in a position that means they will play every week. Adam Federici has done fantastically well for me and I know him really well, but he is no different to a full-back or centre-half or striker. He wants to be back in the squad and fighting for his place and not being on the bench.'
