Reading manager Brian McDermott has said that new signing Daniel Carrico will primarily play as a centre midfielder at the club, but admits his versatility will also be crucial.
The 24-year old made the move to the Madejski Stadium from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon on Monday, for a fee around £600,000. Daniel was also the captain of the European outfit, but has rarely played this season due to his unsure contract situation, meaning a first-team appearance is probably still a few weeks away.
Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, McDermott said: 'He can play in a number of positions, central midfield, centre back and full back. He`ll mainly compete for a midfield position I would think. He can pass it, he can play and he`s a tough boy. Most importantly he wants to play for us and in the Barclays Premier League.'
'He`s a really good person. He was captain of the side at Sporting Lisbon, there was a lot of interest in Europe for him and I know the two big clubs in Portgual were looking to sign him. He`ll come in on Thursday, I don`t know about when he can play, we`ll assess him in training and go from there.'
I'm glad Brian has openly said he will be challenging the midfield position, which is arguably where we have struggled most this season. I can only imagine he will take Leigertwood's place in the near future. We just need that hint of composure on the ball from our centre midfield to dictate play, which Ledge certainly doesn't seem to have!
