Boss: They were shocking goals to give away

Nigel Adkins again bemoaned some lacklustre defending from his side, in their 2-1 loss to Wigan at home yesterday.

The away side scored their first on ten minutes, as Chris McCann sweeped home an opener following a good break and a second came minutes later, as Pearce gifted the ball to Powell to slot home. Pavel Pogrebnyak got one back for the Royals, but couldn't find an equaliser.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, the boss said: 'It was very similar to the Bournemouth game, shocking goals close to each other. We changed the shape before half time to a diamond, then made a couple of substitutions and we were on the front foot totally.'

A good point there, it was very similar to the Bournemouth game in that we conceded two very sloppy goals within minutes of each goal, how do we cut that out? It has to be down to the mindset of the players and continuing to play their normal game.

'We gifted them two goals. Wigan are a good side, they pressed us early on, then there was a little bit of nervousness and our quality wasn't to the level it needs to be. But you cannot legislate for the two poor goals we gave away. Shocking goals.'

Yes, Wigan are a very good side, but that is no excuse for what is two very laughable goals - you get punished more so by the higher quality teams in this division. It's clear that the defenders aren't used to Adkins' style of play - a point that needs addressing next month.
