'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Adkins disagrees with crucial call

Nigel Adkins felt the referee's decision to send off Alex Pearce in the loss to Sheffield Wednesday was the wrong one.

The Royals couldn't continue their good run of form, as in form Wednesday took all three points from the Madejski Stadium. Pearce was sent off after fouling Maghoma in the area, with Chris Maguire scoring the spot kick. Benik Afobe sealed the points with a goal just before the hour mark.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: 'We started well, Pav and Alfie had two great opportunities, then the ref in his wisdom decided to send Alex Pearce off, which for me was totally the wrong decision and changed the complexion of the game.'

'I thought despite that we were on top in the first half, we tried to be positive, kept the two up front and had two wingers at full back. It's hard work for the three in midfield to slide across, but they put a shift in and at half time there was a lot of belief.'

Whether there is a lot of contact is debatable, but the defending was Pearce was not good enough, getting the wrong side of his man. It sounded like we worked hard with ten men, but the extra man counted in the end for Wednesday, who were worthy winners.
