'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Adkins speaks of Drenthe's major turn

Nigel Adkins clearly had a problem with Royston Drenthe a month or two ago, but the manager has said he is now dealing with a different player.

The one-time Dutch international has had a mixed start to his Reading career to say the least, but after coming into the side last month, Drenthe has looked a different player. He has scored his first two goals for the club, as well as putting in some very good performances.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website after the Derby draw, Adkins praised the recent turnaround of Drenthe by saying: 'I thought Royston had a great game, he was brilliant. For me, he's turned a massive corner. From a fitness point of view, the whole thing.'

'We've talked about his ability, it's unquestioned, and I've been delighted with Royston of late and made that perfectly clear. He's moving around the pitch, and Eustace was kicking him all over the place. How he didn't get a foul to the very end I don't know!'

It's good to see Adkins not only praise him publicly, but give him another chance, as it was clear that Adkins did not have a good opinion of him. He now looks much fitter and if he carries on his recent form, he could possibly make the difference in our play-off push.
