'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Adkins pleased with Hector

Nigel Adkins made the decision to play Michael Hector in central midfield on Saturday, but felt it was a gamble that paid off.

Despite being a central defender by trade, Hector made his home debut in centre midfield alongside Danny Williams and put in a good shift. It is a role however that Hector has filled before, in recent loans spells with both Barnet and more recently, SPL side Aberdeen.

Speaking to the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: 'I thought Hector played well & we were pleased with him. In terms of the team we sent out, it was an interesting evening for me on Friday night, I was playing soccer chess in my mind, with all the different scenarios.'

'He has done really well in training, and he's played in midfield for Aberdeen against Celtic this season. We knew he'd have enthusiasm, physicality and the quality to control it and pass it. I wanted to utilise the squad, to move things around.'

Considering the circumstances, Hector did reasonably well in his central midfield role. He proved a good, physical presence in the middle, but his passing was hit and miss. I still feel his future is as a centre half though and has the potential to be a successful one too.
