Adkins takes 'realistic' stance
Nigel Adkins was confident of promotion this time last year, but circumstances have made him take a different approach this time round.
The ongoing ownership saga means that Adkins has been unable to invest in the first team squad since he joined the club back in March last year. Despite new ownership reportedly being close to completion, Nigel is remaining realistic about his team's chances this season.
Quoted by the Official Reading FC website, Adkins said: 'We've got to be realistic. At this moment in time it will be a big ask for us to get automatic promotion. Let's not shy away from it, it would be a big challenge. We are trying to build for the future as well.'
'All being well the ownership will get resolved, that will bring stability and we've got a great Academy here with players coming through. Everyone wants success straight away but firstly we make sure the stability is right. I'm the most positive, ambitious person there is.'
What a difference a year makes? Nine under 21 players travelling with the first team to the Midlands maybe reflects this transitional period, which has been hugely affected by ownership problems. Hopefully it will be done by the end of the week though, then we can all move forward.
