Stam On Brentford Win

Stam On Brentford Win

Reading's position in the play-offs was strengthened with a win over Brentford. It also closed the gap between the Royals and top two Newcastle and Brighton.

Reflecting on the 3-2 win speaking post-match Jaap Stam's news conference saw him quoted by the BBC as saying.

'There is a lot of belief in the players in what they can do and what they can achieve. We always talk about keeping on going, even when you're losing. You never give up. That's what the players are doing. You need to have a good mentality in the team and in the squad. In this league, it's very difficult to have an easy game. We're very willing to work hard to get results and that's what we've done tonight.'

John Swift's goal had put Reading ahead but goals from Jota and Lasse Vibe put Brentford ahead and on for a win. Danny Williams' goal had us on for a point with Roy Beerens winning it late on.

The win took Reading nine points clear of Norwich - outside the play-offs in 7th - with Brighton just five points ahead in 2nd and Championship leaders Newcastle a further point ahead.

Stam continued his review of the game when telling BBC Radio Berkshire.

'It was a great game to watch, but I think for both managers quite tense.'

This latest Madejski Stadium win that also extended the Reading unbeaten run to six games had seen Stam make the bold decision of a triple change in order to get something.

He turned to Beerens, Yann Kermorgant and George Evans with a little under 20 minutes to play with this risk bringing the rewards.

Stam added.

'Sometimes you need to take certain risks. The players that came on earned it very well and that's what they need to do. Sometimes we make choices on who's going to be playing, looking at the opposition and the fitness of the players.'

'The players are sometimes not too happy when they're not playing, but that's part of being a team and a process. If you want to achieve certain things, then you need to be a professional and do your job and that's what the players have done.'
