Player Ratings - Gillingham (H)

Player Ratings - Gillingham (H)

Following on from our cup game against Gillingham yesterday (trying my best to disregard the non-event of the first half), we take a look at the players` performances, as a late brace from Liam Kelly gave us a 2-0 win.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anssi Jaakkola - 7
- A solid showing from the current back-up keeper. He had a quiet game on the whole, but his distribution was comfortable and made a brilliant save in the second half.

Chris Gunter - 7 - Bar the first 20 minutes, it was a good showing from the ever-present full-back. When he offered an attacking outlet and had the courage to bomb forward, it helped the team and he proved to himself he can do it. Did a job at left-wing back when Richard went off injured.

Liam Moore - 6 - Solid as ever, but seemed slightly tentative in coming forward and with his distribution. Usually the expectation is that Moore is the centre half with the ability to make the penetrating passes and carry the ball from the back, but only seemed to do that when we reverted to a back five.

George Evans - 7 - I know it was only against a League One side, but Evans proved his versatility by slotting in comfortably at centre half. His reading of the game and physique helped his case, as well as a good outlet when playing out from the back. I`m not sure it`s for him long term, but good to see he can do a jo there with our current injury crisis.

Omar Richards - 6 - It was a quiet game from the youngster starting his first competitive game for the Royals, who showed shades of wanting to get forward in the first half, but wasn`t brave enough at times. Unfortunately injury ended his evening early, but on the whole, a promising debut for the youngster.

Liam Kelly - 7 - Kelly struggled to get going in the first half, as did many of the team, but in the second half he grew into the game. Quinn coming on allowed him to play further up-field which massively suited him, which led to two very well-taken goals. We`ve got a real gem on our hands.

Andy Rinomhota - 7 - Another one starting his first game and a very good debut also, as he was the only shining light in the first half. He was the only midfielder that looked to drive us forward in the first half, and although he was quieter in the second, still used his physicality well.

Josh Barrett - 5 - Unfortuntaely it just didn`t work out for the young midfielder. For an attacking player, I would like to have seen more intent to drive us on when we were struggling in the first half. He very rarely looked forward and his reluctance to use his left foot is a concern.

Joseph Mendes - 6 - It was good to see the big Frenchman back out on the pitch after an injury-hit pre-season, it was a quiet half, but he used his physicality as a useful outlet for us when we went more direct.

Pelle Clement - 8 Man of the match - Without doubt our most creative player on the pitch. Every time he got the ball he looked forward - plenty of tricks and flair, and did a good job considering he was shipped to right wing-back, the physical side of English football didn`t faze him. Would be interesting to see him more centrally in future.

Sam Smith - 5 - Another first start for an academy graduate, but the physicality of the League One side proved too much for him to handle. There`s no doubting the kid has a bright future, but on this showing it`s a bit early yet and shows we need to get another striker in ASAP.

----------------------------------SUBSTITUTES----------------------------------

Modou Barrow - 7 - The new signing came on at half time and like he did against QPR, he gave the game an injection of pace and looked lively up top.

Stephen Quinn - 7 - It`s fantastic to see him back after being out for a season and his quality was there to see, he changed the game for us in the short time he was playing. He used his experience to up the tempo and find pockets of space that gave us more bite in the final third.

Axel Andresson - Come on because of the injury to Richards and looked very assured at centre back and capable of playing from the back
