Reading had rejected what was believed to have been a £5million bid from West Ham this week for Nicky Shorey, but Steve Coppell has revealed that the amount was £4million, something that he calls a "derisory" offer.
West Ham have been chasing the England international all summer, but have so far seen their efforts knocked back. Although Coppell doesn't want to sell Shorey, if they want him the will have to offer significantly more than they have.
"I can't deny West Ham have made an offer, but I look at the price of players and I consider the offer they made as derisory, not serious," Coppell told Reading World.
"It's an offer made to put the whole issue in the public domain, an invitation to cause unrest in a way."
Shorey still has two years left on his contract, so although he has so far refused to sign a new contract there is no immediate pressure to sell him. Coppell believes he is happy with Reading anyway, so he hopes to still have him at Reading when they face West Ham this Saturday.
