Steve Coppell only went into the transfer market twice during the summer transfer window but he has admitted that he probably will be making some buys in the January sales.
Only Emerse Fae, who became the club record signing, and Kalifa Cisse were signed in the summer, but more arrivals could come in January as Steve Coppell told readingfc.co.uk, "In January we have to strengthen this squad, not because we are in any kind of panic situation but because of a desire to be a player in this league rather than a bit-part.
"Every signing you make is a gamble but it is amazing how the more you pay the less of a gamble it is - and you want the odds stacked in your favour as much as possible."
He has always been reluctant to pay more than the going rate, but he now appears to except that this is something that could be needed to attract the kind of player that will be needed to help us get away from the danger zone, "We have scouts all over the place and a refined network trying to isolate the players we think could help us. I always say it is a fairly limited market that we work in because of the perception of Reading but it is amazing how money talks. It can be very persuasive on occasions," Steve Coppell also told readingfc.co.uk.
"We might have to pay more than the going rate for a few people to make ourselves stronger, better and more resilient in this league."
