Skipper Graeme Murty has admitted that the current performances are not good enough, and the fans, that pay a lot of money, deserve better.
Murty told the BBC, "We know that at the moment we are massively inconsistent.
"It's not easy to justify spending so much money to watch us perform and this is giving something back to the fans."
"I would be lying if I said that the poor start didn't enter certain people's thinking. It can't be good going to places like Fratton Park and coming out after a 7-4 loss wearing a Reading shirt.
"But more than that there has been a growing realisation among the players of how expensive it is, especially for parents who bring their kids to a game."
As a result of this, taking into account the costs involved to try to say thank you to the fans, and make up for previous away results the players have pooled together put £5,000 towards the travel cost for them to the next away trip, taking place at Manchester City later in the month, "They were absolutely brilliant. The lads said that's the noisiest they have heard them away from home for a long time," Murty added.
"I wanted to make that point in a phone-in on Monday morning before unfortunately we ran out of time but we are very appreciative of the fact that it is very expensive to follow your team away from home and that is why we are subsidising the next trip. We need our supporters to be as loud and as boisterous as possible away from home and last Saturday they were."
The £5,000 that has been donated now means that the first 350 people to book a seat on the matchday travel coaches will pay only £5, as opposed to the usual £20.
