In a roundabout way Steve Coppell has ruled out the England job, without exactly doing so! He has however laid out exactly what is needed in the English game.
After England's failure to qualify for the European Championships England boss Steve McClaren was sacked, so not only is a replacement needed, but a complete review and overhaul of the English game is needed according to Coppell, "We have four months until the next international so there is no rush to appoint anyone. It is a job that needs less haste and more speed in this particular case," Coppell told the media.
"Everybody is very disappointed about it. It means we don't take part in the European Championships next year but it may well be the catalyst for a change within English football.
"Inevitably a review is going to be held and they might actually do something about it. We need to do something just to make sure the England team takes part in these big tournaments.
"It is futile to apportion blame. What has happened has happened - let's start again. Let's start now and make sure we are in the next World Cup. And not just making up the numbers but a real threat to the competition."
Having been a former England international, and also being an experience manager he admits he could be a candidate so hasn't ruled himself out, but has hardly ruled himself in either, "I am a candidate only by omission, for those reasons. I have a contract here. It is not an issue. End of subject," Coppell also told the media.
