Long sends Royals through

Reading

West Brom

8th January 2011

Attendance: 13,005

Referee:

A first half goal from Shane Long sent the Royals through to the 4th round of the FA Cup with an upset of sorts against West Brom. After getting to the quarter final last season, Brian McDermott will be looking for a favourable tie in Sunday`s draw!

After hinting at resting players for the game, Brian McDermott made just one change and that was enforced through Andy Griffin`s injury, with Shaun Cummings coming into the side. West Brom meanwhile rested a few players but still had the likes of Chris Brunt and James Morrison on duty. After all his pre match talk, Nicky Shorey was a sub alongside Simon Cox.

The Baggies started the better and Ishmael Miller wasted a good early opportunity, allowing Adam Federici to smother and moments later he had a good penalty shout but the referee deemed Ian Harte`s challenge to be fair.

Harte went close with a free kick whilst Miller had a goal disallowed for a foul of Federici in an exciting first half. Noel Hunt also forced reserve keeper Boaz Myhill into a fine save with an outstanding header.

The deadlock was broken shortly before the interval and it was the man of the moment, Shane Long. Hunt set him up well with a nice flick and he raced in on goal and fired into the back of the net. It was not the cleanest of strikes but that wrong footed the keeper and we were ahead.

At the break the Baggies brought on Jonas Olsson but within 15 minutes he was back in the dressing room after picking up two yellow cards for fouls on the unplayable, Long. That turned the second half in to quite a drab affair but the Royals were not complaining.

Both sides had half penalty shouts but that was as good as it got with West Brom rarely threatening the excellent Reading defence. Focus can now turn to the 4th round and Sunday`s draw whilst West Brom continue their winless run at the Madejski Stadium.

Star Player

Shaun Cummings was outstanding deputising for Andy Griffin. His overlapping runs forward give our game a different dimension he defended well throughout.
