Coming up through the Reading academy, McCarthy had successful loans at Brentford and Yeovil Town.

Following these loan spells, McCarthy was offered a contract at the Madejski in August 2010 which kept him at the club until the summer of 2013. Just days later he earned his first England U21 cap.

During the 2010/11 season, Alex had a very successful spell in the first team during Adam Federici's absence in which he earnt Man of the Match performances aginst Leeds and Premier League outfit Everton.

His impressive displays saw many clubs come calling - but he elected to join QPR in September 2014. His stint at Loftus Road was brief - departing in the summer of 2015 for Premier League football with Crystal Palace.
