Despite spending all his youth career in his native country of Poland, he joined Premier League side Wigan on a week trail and earned himself a deal. However, he failed to make a league appearance for the Latics.

In 2010, he then joined Championship side Derby on loan and completed a permanent switch two months later after impressing manager Nigel Clough. He went onto play 39 games for the Rams, scoring 5 goals.

However, after a falling out with manager Clough in the 2011/12 season, Cywka was not wanted by Clough and tranfer listed the midfielder. He was all set to return to native Poland on January 2012 deadline day but Reading came in with a late offer and Cywka accepted.
