The Oxford-born winger started his career in the depths of non-league football with Oxford City, Bromley and Slough Town. However, McCleary earned his big break at Nottingham Forest under Colin Calderwood after impressing at a trial at the City Ground.
Until the 2011/12 campaign, McCleary was very much a squad player at Forest, making cameo appearances off the bench. After an impressive end to the 11/12 season where he scored nine goals in 22 games, he earned a move to Premier League new boys Reading on a free transfer.
