'If It's Football, It's Vital'

European Champions keen on Royals stopper?

Chelsea are tracking Reading keeper Alex McCarthy, according to the Daily Star.

The 23-year old is currently in the process of returning from a shoulder injury that has kept him sidelined for the past four months, but reports have stated that Chelsea are considering a bid for McCarthy, after missing out on Jack Butland on deadline day.

McCarthy, who is a former England under 21 international, had a sparkling start to the season, after taking the place of an error-prone Adam Federici. However, the Australian has won his place back and is solidifying his number one spot at the Madejski Stadium with some fine performances between the sticks.

I'm not sure what benefit this would be to Alex, as I can't see him becoming a Chelsea number one in the future, despite his great potential. It is believed he will return before the end of the season, so a loan move to the Championship to regain some fitness and confidence would be beneficial for both parties.
