'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Player Ratings - Charlton (H)

Following the victory over Charlton on Tuesday night, Vital Reading looks at the players' individual performances in the unconvincing win.

Alex McCarthy - 7 - Macca only had to make one major save all night and that was the one-on-one with Church, which he did very well. Aerially he was very good too, claiming and punching balls away in the later stages of the game. Kicking is still very questionable though.

Stephen Kelly - 6 - Looked much more comfortable in a right back position, a solid showing from the Irishman. May have been lucky to have not conceded a penalty, after an early challenge on Simon Church.

Alex Pearce - 7 - Man of the match - A great defensive display from Pearcey, who looks to have got his confidence back following the Sheffield Wednesday mauling. Won countless headers and made some crucial interceptions late on.

Kaspars Gorkss - 7 - I was worried that Charlton's pace would cause him problems, but he was not troubled at all on that front. Similarly to Pearce, had to show his composure when we were coming under pressure.

Shaun Cummings - 7 - Considering he was occupying the left back spot, he did very well indeed, also as it was his first appearance in over two months. Had a few shaky moments in the first half, but was very solid through. Deserves to stay in the side over Kelly when Gunter returns on Saturday.

Garath McCleary - 6 - Unfortunately the winger was anonymous for most of the game, which probably wasn't helped by the midfield being very narrow. Hit the post early in the second half with a good effort.

Danny Guthrie - 6 - Looked off the pace today, with his passing quite sloppy at times, which is rare for him. Didn't lack in effort though, similarly to his midfield partner.

Danny Williams - 7 - Great energy in the midfield, which was unfortunately halted early because of an injury that forced him off. Great tenacity for the goal too.

Jobi McAnuff - 6 - You can never halt Jobi's effort, but it looked as if he was trying too hard at times. He was probably lacking in match fitness to be fair to him, but will probably be replaced by Obita on Saturday.

Billy Sharp - 7 - Great full debut from the on-loan striker, who was certainly getting himself about. He held the ball up well and brought his teammates into play when he could. Great snapshot finish for the goal, hopefully he can stay fit now.

Pavel Pogrebnyak - 7 - The Pog had a great start to the game, but died off in the second period. His first touch was superb and showed good link up play with Sharp at times.

Hope Akpan - 5 - The midfielder has been complaining about his lack of game time in the local press and his peformance today probably answered his own question. Does not look composed on the ball whatsoever, which is a must for a centre midfielder.

Hal Robson-Kanu - 6 - Unfortunately for HRK, the only time he got the ball was when we were on the break, but no teammates were getting in support of him. Did well considering he had no one with 20 yards of him most of the time.

Nick Blackman - 6 - Decent cameo performance from the forward, who occupied the right-wing.
