Player Ratings - Charlton (A)

Player Ratings - Charlton (A)
After another victory on the road at Charlton, Vital Reading takes a look at the players' individual performances from the win at The Valley.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Alex McCarthy - 6 - A clean sheet will be a good psychological boost for the young keeper, despite not having a lot to do. His distribution was OK, but one poor clearance nearly got us into trouble, but got away with it. Other than this minor point, a solid game from Macca.

Chris Gunter - 6 - Defensively he did his job well, it was just a shame it took until the second half to see the Welshman venture into Charlton's half more often. Dealt with the pace of Harriot well, but was helped by Charlton playing quite narrow, allowing Williams to give a helping hand.

Alex Pearce - 7 - Very solid game defensively from Pearce, but luckily came up against a very weak attack. His distribution from the back was mixed though - on some occasions he tried to pass it out, but on other occasions he merely just punted it as far as he could!

Kaspars Gorkss - 6 - Sporting the Terry Butcher look after a collision of heads, it didn't effect him in a solid display. He had the odd shaky moment at the back, but always recovered well. It will be interesting to see if he keeps his place for Tuesday night against Bournemouth.

Jordan Obita - 7 - Another good and solid display from the youngster, who will probably keep Bridge on the bench for a while yet. He is improving as a defender game-by-game and while his positioning can be hit and miss, the attacking threat he offers is a crucial asset.

Danny Williams - 8 - VR MotM - While he looked short of fitness against Huddersfield, his energy in this game won us all the points. His goal was one of the many positives of his performance - constantly hassling the Charlton midfield and trying to create attacking openings.

Danny Guthrie - 7 - I say it every time, but we are so much a better side with him in the team and the game proved this. His ability to work the midfield and keep the ball moving is superb and very crucial away from home. His contribution for the goal also can't go unnoticed.

Royston Drenthe - 5 - Despite a good recent run of form, it was an ineffective performance from the Dutchman, who was used on the right wing. He gave the ball away far too often and seemed to try too hard at times. Was unsurprisingly subbed just past the hour mark.

Jobi McAnuff - 6 - Typical tireless performance the skipper, eventhough he didn't really offer a huge amount going forward. Definitely more effective in the second half, where the game opened up. Does he bring more to the table than McCleary though? That's up for debate.

Adam le Fondre - 6 - Interesting call from Adkins to start Alfie, but I thought this was one of his better starts this season. He created a nuisance of himself and showed some good touches, especially in the second half. Great run also for our goal to create space for Williams.

Pavel Pogrebnyak - 6 - Pog did what Pog has done all season - play with his back to goal, battle and bring others into play. While he did this well enough, he unfortunately couldn't get himself in the penalty box often enough, often finding himself out wide on a few occasions.

-------------------------SUBSTITUTES-----------------------------

Garath McCleary - 6 - Didn't see a huge amount of the ball, but offered more to the side than an ineffective Drenthe.

Hal Robson-Kanu - 6 - Put himself about well when we came on, but did not have much time to have an impact.
